Project Overview

This project focused on the financial risks of farming in extreme weather conditions using business planning, cash flow analysis, on-farm workshops and technical conferences. The target audience were the organic farmers in Vermont who were impacted by Tropical Storm Irene, predominantly beginner and mid-level farmers. The project was delivered statewide, with 9 regional on-farm trainings and 9 workshops held at 3 different conferences. 13 farmers developed cash flow analyses or business plans to plan for extreme weather risks on their farms, 95 farmers attended on-farm trainings to learn techniques for addressing financial risks, and 214 farmers attended technical workshops at 3 conferences to learn new tools to reduce the financial risks of changing weather. The participants improved the viability of their farms through educational workshops, financial planning and increased knowledge about crop insurance programs.
