Project Overview
Annie´s Project is an excellent curriculum for meeting the risk management educational needs of women on Midwestern farms. We modified the curriculum to specifically address the risk management needs of Northeast farmers. Women on farms in the Northeast region have different types of enterprises than their Midwestern counterparts, including dairy and fruits and vegetables. They are more involved in direct marketing, and more likely to be principal operators. We developed a team of risk management experts to modify and deliver an educational curriculum on the following risks: production, financial, market, human resources, and family/community. The curriculum (6 sessions) was successfully conducted with 9 participants in southeastern Pennsylvania in winter of 2008-2009. Evaluation data are very positive indicating increases in skills, knowledge, and value placed on risk management tools. Participants report intending to find farm records, develop marketing strategies, perform competitor analyses, perform SWOT analyses, and review farm business structure.
