Project Overview
The five-session workshops series, So You Want to Be a Farmer? was comprised of
1.) So You Want to Be a Farmer?: The Dirty Truth.
2.) What is a Business Plan and Why You Need One.
3.) The Dollars and Sense of Financing a Small Farm.
4.) News Flash! You Don’t Need To Own The Land You Farm.
5.) Farm Tour: What A Real Farm Smells Like.
The series successfully educated entering and pre-start farmers on the essential building blocks of starting a farm business, connecting them to the farming community and the network of existing services.
The workshop series was facilitated by the SEMAP Program Director and guest speakers and was held at the UMass Amherst Cranberry Station in Wareham MA. The workshops addressed all five risks associated with agriculture - production, price, financial, legal, and human. SEMAP worked with our referral network of agricultural service providers to design a series of workshops that touched upon all farm risk areas in an exploratory way. There were a total of 17 guest speakers spread out over the five-week course, including seven farmers who we visited on the last workshop – the farm tour.
