Project Overview
This project developed and delivered advanced dairy and corn production course materials to provide risk management training for 190 Northeast women, Latino, and new farmers and for 63 Northeast agricultural lenders. Focus was given to team-building to enhance management practices and optimal crop insurance usage. Producers benefitted from analysis of advanced production patterns including: yield enhancement, equipment modernization, labor efficiency, and effective crop insurance product utilization. Producer participants (91) attended five workshops in PA where Spanish language resources were available via bilingual instructors. An additional 109 farmers completed training via correspondence. Penn State is a nationally recognized leader in agricultural correspondence training. Design of risk management plans for implementation in 2009/2010 made farmer participants more economically sustainable. Agricultural lenders were targeted participants to improve lender understanding of production as well as cultural values and challenges unique to women and Latinos. Participants shared risk management results via workshop interaction and the grading input with reference to base results.
