Project Overview
Rural South Institute collaborated with a few other local organizations in rural Alabama to deliver F-A-R-M Education to 115 limited resource and
socially-disadvantaged producers underserved by crop insurance in the Black Belt region. The project assisted 396 minority producers underserved by crop insurance, exceeding the original participation estimates. Through effective
information dissemination strategies and strategic partnerships with several local organizations, the project reached a diverse group of over 3,500
additional underserved producers throughout rural
Alabama. The project's specific objectives were to (1) promote crop insurance and
risk management education opportunities among producers through
print, social-media, radio, television, and through strategic relationships
with grassroots organizations; (2) conduct crop insurance and marketing
education to mitigate production and market risks; (3) deliver
financial and risk management, business planning and recordkeeping training and education to
urban gardeners and underserved socially-disadvantaged producers; and (4)
facilitate producers' access to capital, crop insurance, and government
programs to enhance viability and profitability of minority-owned farms. Project outcomes included increased participation in crop
insurance, risk management, and government programs; improved
financial and recordkeeping skills; adoption of improved production
technology and marketing strategies; and enhanced farm profitability.
