Project Overview
Sustainable cattle production is vital to the economy of rural Utah and the Intermountain West. Cattle producers face many different types of risk, though they often look at risk as just part of production agriculture. Production risk, however, often impacts other types of risk exposure requiring a holistic approach to risk management. The Beehive Master Beef Manager Program (BMBM) was devised as one way to educate cattle producers about risk by helping them identify the risk within their operations, and then teach them principles which will aid them as they develop strategies to mitigate that risk.
This project expanded a pilot program to a broader state-wide audience. Producers were introduced to the types of risk and taught how to identify and prioritize risk in their operations. Workshops then provided tools to help them manage their perceived risks.
More than 70 producers managing some 27,500 head of cattle have attended 18 workshops held in five different teaching locations throughout Utah.
