Project Overview
The 5400 small dairy producers in Pennsylvania are challenged by higher input prices and fluctuating milk prices. One opportunity is the production of premium priced organic milk.
There is not any information available to PA producers that adequately address’s the anticipated profitability of organic production during and after transition.
After assembling recent historical data from organic producers, interactive spreadsheets was developed. The spreadsheets will enable the small dairy producer to input their financial data, compare it to the data collected, and determine their estimated profitability.
The costs associated with organic milk production transition from conventional was consolidated on fact sheets and the information presented via workshops and newsletters.
The objective was to have at least 660 anticipated participants. The objective is to have at least 198 producers utilize the data and spreadsheets to assist in their decision to transition to organic production. However, due to the current economic volitilaty in both the conventional and organic milk markets, producers at this time are just in a survival mode and looking to make any significant changes.
