Project Overview
DuBois Institute “Alabama Black Belt Risk Management Education Program” proposes to deliver 6 (six) one day workshops over 18 (eighteen) months to help beginning, veteran and socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers in Central Alabama Blackbelt counties who are underserved by crop insurance to understand risks inherent in their
operations. The program objective is to increase participant utilization of crop insurance protections and other emerging risk management practices; practical use of the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation (FCIC) programs (specifically Whole Farm Revenue Protection), products and services. Participants will learn critical financial management tools (record keeping) essential to under-writing crop insurance policies. Participants will be trained in cutting-edge production methods (high-tunnel house growing systems) and relevant marketing strategies to help these specialty crop producers thrive in the
new normal created by COVID-19. 240 farmers/participants will be trained over the life of the program. Each participant is expected to walk away with practical working knowledge of how to apply for crop insurance and a field-tested operation manual to manage high-tunnel production. The DuBois
Institute is committed to the creation of new 21 St. century farmers focusing on the production of specialty crops to support local and regional food markets.
