Project Overview
This project addressed product and enterprise diversification needs of small and midsize farms in all 3 Delaware counties and 6 bordering counties in neighboring states. Curriculum was adapted and used to deliver a series of 8 workshops on entrepreneurial areas including direct on-farm and internet marketing, agritourism and entertainment farming, and on-farm value-added production and marketing. Fifty farm family members were targetted to attend these workshops. A second method involved recruiting 9 retired farmers/agribusiness persons to serve as active mentors to 10 farm families involved in new enterprises. These mentors spent a minimum of 2 days a month for 6 months with each family. At the end of the workshop series, 30 participants had a written business plan with a detailed marketing plan for a new enterprise. After 6 months, 10 families (over 20 participants) in the mentoring program had a written business plan with detailed marketing plan for a new enterprise.
