Project Overview

This project helped 64 small and mid-sized farmers in western Massachusetts manage risk through improved understanding and use of marketing strategies, including branded marketing, electronic and traditional communication, and on-site activities. Sixty-four farmers representing 43 farms attended one or more of a series of six workshops; 21 received one-on-one technical assistance that will help them develop marketing plans that match the needs of each farm, fully utilize the Local Hero® brand, and incorporate traditional and e-business marketing tools such as web-pages, email communication, and electronic newsletters. A Marketing 101 manual will be available to many more farmers via our website.

In workshop evaluations, 86% of the participants indicated that they would incorporate new marketing techniques learned in the workshops. Fourteen participants created a first-time or updated an existing marketing plan. Our goal is to help farmers reduce marketing risk and maintain viable businesses by helping them understand and implement marketing best practices.
