Project Overview
Over 3,000 producers attended 45 evening educational meetings with subject matter covering the following:
• Low Stress Livestock Handling – 275 participated in 3 workshops on the methods of low stress livestock handling and humane livestock facility design.
• Livestock Facility Design – 217 participated in 3 meetings that demonstrated proper livestock handling facilities. All participants were broken into small work groups that designed working chutes using table top models.
• Beef Quality Assurance – 350 livestock operations were trained in proper handling and administering vaccines to ensure cattle are vaccinated according to
BQA standards. Out of this group 100 producers were recertified as BQA producers and 55 marketed 1320 calves in special sales.
• Grassland Management Systems – 360 producers attended 4 meetings on management of pastures and grasslands. Producers were instructed on the Keys to Forage Profitability.
• Alternative Energy for the Small Farm was presented to 310 farmers at 4 locations. Producers were able to determine the feasibility of incorporating wind and solar power into their farming operation.
• Genetics and Crossbreeding in the Beef Herd- 390 producers attended 4 meetings on using crossbreeding and composites in their beef herds. Eleven producers have incorporated crossbreeding or composite bulls in their beef herds.
• Farmland Protection – 250 landowners attended 4 meetings detailing the West Virginia Farmland Protection Program. As a result, 45 individuals have acquired additional information and 32 formal applications have been submitted.
• Livestock Risk Protection and Farm Record Keeping was presented to 243 farmers at 4 locations.
• Reproduction Issues in Cows/Bulls - 4 meetings were conducted with 225 producers attending workshops on basic management of reproduction issues in the beef herd. As a result of these workshops breeding soundness exams were conducted on 54 beef sires.
• Controlling Internal Parasites in Ruminants – 4 meetings were conducted with 268 producers attending. As a result of these meetings, 55 individuals have been trained in FAMACHA and 20 producers are fecal sampling both small and large ruminants.
