Project Overview

The “Adding Value, Managing Risk” project builds on the region’s rich agricultural traditions, networks of farmers and a dynamic specialty foods sector to support over 422 primarily Hispanic, Native American, and limited resource farmers in Northern New Mexico by increasing farm incomes and reducing risk through value-added activities, innovative marketing opportunities, and utilization of risk management tools. Forty farmers will increase their knowledge of business, product development, and risk management tools through TCEDC´s locally-created, “Food Sector Opportunity Project" curriculum and the NxLevel "Tilling the Soil of Opportunity" course. Five farmers will start value-added businesses and 20 farmers will expand their sales through TCEDC’s workshops, free business assistance, Food Center facilities, and participation in the "OSO GOOD FOODS" cause-marketing campaign. Finally, awareness, understanding, and utilization of federal crop insurance and other risk management tools will be increased through an intensive educational outreach and media campaign targeted to over 422 area farmers.
