Project Overview
County extension educators and University personnel conducted an “Income Opportunities in Agriculture” conference on February 28, 2009 held in Lancaster, within Penn State Cooperative Extension’s Capital Region. The conference helped growers evaluate risk management and production practices for several types of small-scale or part-time enterprises. The program also highlighted the necessary steps involved in starting a new business or enterprise including topics such as marketing, budgeting, and insurance issues (including liability exposure and crop insurance). The participants then choose from three tracks including; Value-Added/Agritainment, Livestock, and Horticulture.
Because of the makeup of these smaller operations, this program utilized the production and risk management information available in Penn State’s Agricultural Alternatives publication series and presenter engaged in the production or business being covered. More information about this publication series can be found on-line at http://agalternatives.aers.psu.edu.
