Project Overview

The Preparing for Later Life Farming program assisted 65 multi-generational New Jersey farm families in preparing for farm transition. The eight hour one day program was offered in three New Jersey locations.  Farm transition curriculum was developed utilizing materials from the Rutgers Later Life Farming website,  the University of Vermont's Farm Business Succession program, the University of Iowa's Evaluating Your Estate Plan program, the PA Farm Link Planning the Future of Your Farm workbook and evaluation materials from National Annie's Project.  Curriculum developed has been made available through the Rutgers Later Life Farming website along with each of the filmed presentations.  Participants improved their ability to communicate desires for the farm; began determining the future of the farm; assessed future financial needs; identified potential sources of income; understand the legal and financial realities of farm transfer; began assembling their expert team members; and developed an outline of their estate plan.
