Project Overview
According to farmers, recently conducted agritourism workshops provide only superficial coverage of issues pertaining to risk management. We addressed this problem by leveraging those workshops to create a program to help farmers navigate the risk management issues arising from agritourism activities such as infrastructure investment, tourism marketing, and on-farm events. Specifically, we used input from previously conducted workshops to develop and conduct two interactive education seminars during which approximately 65 farmers, with the help of facilitators and risk management experts, created their own personalized risk management plan. We offered to provide follow-up technical assistance for those who decided to implement and monitor this plan, but upon having few takers we decided (with permission from NECRME) to apply project resources to the creation and distribution of two lasting artifacts: a risk management brochure and an article in a trade magazine aimed at producers of farm and forest tourism. These artifacts will have permanent homes in the Risk Management Library, the PSU Center for Rural Partnerships website, and the VT Tourism Data Center website. This combination of educational workshops and the development of permanent artifacts allow us to feel confident that we met the proposed results of producer understanding, development, and implementation.
