Project Overview
Research has indicated that farmers typically market most of their grain crops in the bottom one-third of the yearly price range. Two separate grain marketing education programs were offered to farmers from six mid-Atlantic states to help them eliminate common mistakes made when marketing grain. In all, 20 workshops were attended by a total of 393 farmers. This program was based on the Minnesota program entitled "Winning the Game". The program has been adapted for this region. Program participants played a marketing game based on real years and real prices. The workshops were be presented in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virgina and Virginia. Farmers that participated in the grain marketing education workshops developed written marketing plans. A total of 179 farmers developed a pre harvest grain marketing plan during the workshop they attended and a total of 175 farmers developed a post harvest grain marketing plan during the workshop they attended. The overwhelming majority of program participants indicated the education received at the workshops would help them become better marketers.
