Project Overview
The risk management topics addressed in this project included product and enterprise diversification, understanding of economic risks associated with new product technology, financial and production records and analysis. This project revolved around farmer-feeder operations defined as such because they both feed cattle and raise crops used for feed. A brief needs assessment was contucted to identify the challenges farmer-feeders face in their operations. They were surveyed on various aspects of their operations from marketing decisions to record keeping systems to production practices. A two day seminar was held with the purpose of addressing production issues as well as educating cow calf and stocker operators on the components of farmer-feeder operations. A resource manual was created from the course materials and presentations and additional fact sheets available from different Universities. Forty-seven producers attended the seminar. Follow up evaluations indicated their understanding of the subject and issues. It is anticipated an additional 50 producers will request the resource manual developed from the resources and course presentations.
