Project Overview

This project responded to participant requests from previous workshops for education and training on accrual accounting techniques using QuickBooks software. Over several years, the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in collaboration with University of Wisconsin-Madison/Extension has conducted financial management workshops designed to train farmers in implementing basic accounting systems. The response to these workshops was overwhelming with evaluations indicating that producers wanted additional training. Original proposal was to teach four workshops reaching 80 participants. We held eight workshops across the state, reaching 175 producers by offering hands-on time with the popular software, QuickBooks. At the same time participants were educated about the accrual accounting method. Accrual based financial reports yield a more accurate measure of profit, cost of production and equity from which good risk management decisions are made.
