Project Overview

For specialty crop farmers in South Central Minnesota and West Central Wisconsin, farm viability is synonymous with farm resilience, as more farmers experience crop losses or damage due to drought, flooding or heavy pest pressure triggered by climate fluctuations.  Land Stewardship Project’s (LSP’s) Partnering for Specialty Crop Success assisted farmers with adapting resilient practices while keeping their businesses healthy by addressing risks to production, business and individual and family wellness.  Farmers, staff and educators reached 144 specialty crop farmers through trainings that emphasized peer-to-peer exchange as well as training through the ‘Risk to Resiliency’ training.  Over the course of 4 online trainings 30 farmers expanded and strengthened their support network, increased their knowledge of resiliency practices that reduce their risk of crop and financial losses.  Fourteen of these farmers adopted a resiliency strategy for their farm.  An additional 10 specialty crop farmers developed a resiliency plan for their farms and adopted at least one resiliency strategy using knowledge and tools they gained through the ‘Risk to Resiliency’ training.  An additional 100 specialty crop farmers will increase their knowledge of resiliency practices by viewing or listening to video and audio (podcast) content created through the project.
