Project Overview

This project offers aspiring and beginning farmers in New England four innovative learning tools that can increase their ability to manage financial and human resource-related risk. Key to project design is adaptation of a "learning guide" educational approach designed to support self-guided, competency-based learning under the guidance of a skilled coach or mentor, or on one´s own. Four tools were developed and field tested: "Farm Law and Regulation," "Farm Safety," "Farm Recordkeeping," and "New Technology Assessment." To support service providers´ use of guides in mentored or workshop settings, the project created "A Service Provider´s Handbook on Creating Learning Guides" and service provider "editions" of project guides that include scripted workshops on excerpted material. Project personnel field-tested the self-study guides (16) and 5 scripted workshops (106), and trained 6 service provider/mentors; final editions of all project material will be available in fall 2007 at www.smallfarm.org.
