Project Overview

Livestock producers in the Catskills region of Delaware, Otsego, Sullivan and Schoharie counties face the challenges of inefficient means to get their animals to reputable processing facilities, lack of information on alternative production systems, and little-to-no expertise in marketing and pricing for increased profits. This program provided producers with risk management education on business planning and entrepreneurship, animal evaluation for market readiness, pasture management, alternative feeding programs for grass-fed enterprises, and marketing and processing strategies for profit and quality. It concentrated on beef, sheep, and goat enterprises. Producers received training in writing a farm business plan and their enterprises were reviewed for marketing strategies and risk management. It is anticipated that this program will also result in improved networking within the producer groups. Participants demonstrated increased knowledge in each of these key areas.
