Project Overview

Wisconsin Amish communities have been growing bedding plants for retail and wholesale
markets with varying degrees of success. Trial and error production and pest
management practices utilized by the Amish often result in losses of marketable
crops and unnecessary exposure to health risks from improper pesticide use and storage.

This project was undertaken to address the financial and health risks faced by Wisconsin Amish
bedding plant growers and their families.

As of May 1, 2014, a total of 42 print based handbooks have been distributed to growers from six counties in Wisconsin via extension educators.  Two workshops sponsored by supplier companies are scheduled for July in two separate areas of the state where additional handbooks will be distributed.  At that time additional information on the importance of proper procedures and legalities will be conveyed emphasizing the material included in the handbook.

Pre-handbook surveys were distributed along with the handbooks.

A follow up survey will be done at the end of the 2014 growing season.
