Project Overview

This project addresses primarily the California Labor and OSHA regulations that are putting California small farmers at great financial risk, resulting in $26,000 fines. State agency enforcement ´Sweep´ teams make unannounced farm visits looking for violations of safety, labor, and health. We implemented training programs to help 1,200 Hmong, 450 Lao, 900 Hispanic, and other minority farmers in Fresno County and discussed the laws regularly on our biweekly Hmong radio broadcasts from 2005 through 2008. We organized 19 meetings and have been interviewed numerous times by radio, television, and print media. We helped 24 farmers obtain quotes from an insurance company.

The meetings were taught in Hmong, Lao, and Spanish, with other CBO’s including Hmong American Community and Neisi Farmers League. Through this grant we have been able to get the necessary information out to over 2,000 farmers. At least 240 minority farms have changed their regulatory compliance farm policies as a result of the information we presented.
