Project Overview

Competition in the nursery and greenhouse industry has become fierce. The dominance of big box stores has put downward pressure on prices while costs are increasing (especially labor). We collected thorough detailed financial data from Northeastern growers to update the Rutgers Greenhouse Cost Accounting program to address producers’ current financial risk management needs. Modifications to the program allow clientele to monitor labor costs, calculate break-even costs, use more cost categories, and calculate the costs of producing plants outdoors. We developed and placed case studies on the Rutgers University Farm Management Website (http://aesop.rutgers.edu/~farmmgmt.) Producers attended educational workshops in New Jersey and throughout the Northeast and other states to learn how to use the New Greenhouse/Nursery Cost Accounting program to develop their most profitable marketing mix while reducing labor costs and identifying and controlling other costs.
