Project Overview

We created a program to help farmers navigate the risk management issues arising from food safety. Specifically, we 1) developed a model food safety plan specific to agritourism and direct marketing; 2) developed and conducted two education seminars and one webinar for the purpose of sharing information and introducing approximately 50 farmers to this model; and 3) offered follow-up technical assistance to agritourism farmers interested in implementing and monitoring their own personalized food safety plan. Understanding and managing the risk management implications of food safety ensures that agritourism providers can economically and efficiently produce safe food and continue to promote positive agricultural and rural experiences.
