Project Overview

The targets of this project were: improved understanding and use of contract production, branded or certified marketing and value added enterprises; and improvement in ability to manage changes in policy and regulation. We organized four workshops in different areas of the state to help producers (who are considering or are in the first or second year of organic certification) understand and comply with national organic standards and record-keeping requirements of organic certification. Participants were be taught to: use the organic rule to determine what practices are allowed and which are prohibited; identify potential threats; find help solving problems when they arise; and use ATTRA record-keeping forms. Of the 101 producers who attended the workshops, 48 adopted the ATTRA record-keeping forms, we anticipate that 30 will reduce the conditions of their certification, 6 were partnered with mentors and 2 successfully applied for organic certification (about a dozen more are in transition).
