Project Overview
This project addressed the financial risks faced by Massachusetts cranberry growers. The economic decline of the cranberry industry had forced many farmers to seek off farm income or sell upland acreage. Adopting diversification projects can give cranberry growers an alternative by reducing financial risks and increasing cash flow.
The first step was the research and development of a manual outlining diversification options that complemented growing cranberries. The target audience were cranberry growers from Southeastern Massachusetts who attended two workshops developed and based on the project manual.
Upon completion of the workshops, a scheduled field visit viewed a working farm with a vareitey diversification projects. A variety of workshops that coresponded to viable diversification projects were offered to the growers of Massachusetts. Participants then targeted an area of interest for a specific diversification project. Individual meetings with a technical advisor determined the project’s economic and horticultural viability. The advisor then provided the needed support that the diversification project required.
