Project Overview

The aim of this project was to increase the use of risk management tools in small equine farms in Salem, Cumberland, and Gloucester counties in New Jersey. We held a series of five educational workshops for 53 equine farm owners or managers, each focusing on one of the risk management areas. Each workshop had one or two speakers who delivered a presentation on one of the Risk Management Topics from that area. For example, the Production Risk workshop focused on equine insurance products (veterinary as well as farm liability) and water use decisions through Rutgers University’s Best Management Practices. At the end of the series, participants had a better understanding of the tools available to them. Two months after the series, 46 participants implemented at least one tool covered in a workshop that they did not have in place before.
