Project Overview

This project focuses on mitigating financial risks to farm businesses posed by inadequate business planning and financial management. 32 producers received detailed financial and business management training through two twelve week NxLeveL courses. The courses targeted producers along the mid-south Oregon coast Oregon (Coos, Curry, Douglas and Lane counties), and was taught by NxLeveL certified ShoreBank staff and Southwestern Community College Staff. The course focused on berry, dairy, vegetable and livestock producers, and was conducted from January to April of 2005. The course provided participants with the opportunity to analyze current business practices, assess strengths and weaknesses, and clarify farm/business capacity. They participants receive one to one advising, and interaction with guest speakers including farm entrepreneurs, accountants, lenders, and market experts. At the completion of the course, some of the participating operations completed a business plan, other participants did not. The plans will provide individual producers with the knowledge to support new product/market opportunities.
