Project Overview
Small farms in Chenango and surrounding counties are facing severe shortages of veterinarians willing to treat large animals. This program worked with veterinarians, both local and from Cornell University, to hold a series of 4 workshops to train producers in basic veterinarian skills which they can then apply to their own farms to reduce the threat of diseases and disorders. This program trains people in animal care to alleviate work for the veterinarian and allow producers to do more prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease on their own – saving time and money. These skills are now taken back to the farm and taught to other animal caretakers. This program targeted producers of all animal species, primarily in Chenango County but also in neighboring counties. A series of species-specific workshops, aimed at recruiting 20-30 participants has been developed. These workshops includeed both an “in-class” setting and hands-on animal health care and treatment.
