Project Overview
The objective of this project was to deliver a hands-on educational program on dairy and financial management. In these workshops we integrated the operational and financial aspects of dairy farming systems. For this program, the project team (integrated by Drs. Gonzalo Ferreira and Hernan Tejeda) prepared a holistic and friendly program that included practical (i.e., hands-on) exercises analyzing dairy management information systems, peer-discussions, and cash-flow projections using a spreadsheet tool. Workshops were delivered at 4 locations within the Commonwealth of Virginia, and 34 people attended the workshops. The quite-diverse audience included dairy farmers in general, young dairy farmers, extension educators, students, and consultants. In concert, the project team and the attendees developed a holistic and real-case cash flow projection. By doing this, attendees learned and understood that developing a cash-flow projection was easier than anticipated. After developing the cash flow, the attendees and project team held open discussions to evaluate and decide future action plans to help overcome critical moments of financial stress.
