Project Overview
The goal of this project was to equip farmers with the knowledge and tools necessary to build the resiliency of specialty crop farms in the Southern Extension Risk Management Education region. Our focus was on providing workshops on Southern Whole Farm Resiliency (SWFR) and educating specialty crop farmers on production and crop insurance risk mitigation that builds resilient systems of production, including the updated Whole Farm Revenue Protection (WFRP) policy.
NCAT implemented six interactive workshop sessions highlighting farmers and other presenters in Mississippi and Arkansas. The target audience was specialty crop farmers with diverse crop and livestock systems including tribal farmers, military veterans, and limited resource farmers. The workshop locations were in Mississippi and Arkansas, but we ended up having participants beyond those states as virtual workshops were made available to the broader public. We had a total of 180 workshop participants, and surveys demonstrated an improvement in participants’ knowledge and understanding of production, marketing and financial risks.
Beyond the six workshop sessions, NCAT also developed a podcast and four farm tour videos highlighting risk management practices utilized by farmers in our target region, and conducted outreach via NCAT’s ATTRA Sustainable Agriculture Program list-serv, social media, and YouTube.
