Project Overview
The Managing Risk for Oklahoma’s Small Flock Poultry Producers project implemented two programs to help producers gain knowledge and skills that manage varying types of risk when raising and selling poultry products either traditionally or organic.
The first program was a two-day backyard poultry management conference. This conference combined traditional educational presentations with hands-on sessions covering a variety of production, financial, marketing and legal risk management topics as well as sessions explaining the differences between organic and traditional production systems. Evaluations, pre and post tests were done on each session to measure knowledge gained and adoption intentions.
Second program was the creation of an OSU Poultry YouTube channel. Eleven videos covering several backyard poultry topics have been crated and published.
Constant Contact, an e-mail marketing service was used to survey participants about practices adopted after the conference and the impacts of those changes. The conference targeted Oklahoma’s small flock poultry producers. Attendance was only 22 producers. YouTube videos are available for not only Oklahoma, but any producer in the U.S. To date the videos have had 503 views.
Number of Participants: 525
