Project Overview

Dairy producers need plans of action to address production, market, and institutional risks posed by the potential introduction of a foreign animal disease. If such an agricultural bio-disaster occurred anywhere in the US, it would result in the loss of US export markets, widespread restrictions on animal and product movement, and loss of animals in disease control areas. This project raised producers’ awareness of the realities of a foreign animal disease response and enabled them to plan for the survival of their businesses. Participants were 87 dairy producers and community members from dairy-dependent communities in Vermont. By the end of a series of 3 workshops (held in each of 3 locations), 47 participants demonstrated increased awareness of the risks to their businesses posed by a foreign animal disease event and began the process of creating both personal and community-based action plans to survive such a bio-disaster.
