Project Overview

In this project, we helped New EnglandĀ“s beginning farmers learn about land acquisition options and make sound decisions about land tenure, financing and contracts. We assisted beginning farmers as well as other farm seekers to understand farm tenure and how various land acquisition strategies affect their business planning. We developed an online course organized into six topics. Each topic offers information, links, stories and learning tools about tenure basics, owning and leasing, financing land, communications and community partners. Participants received support and counseling to develop land acquisition plans, find and assess properties, and negotiate tenure arrangements.

We also conducted 6 workshops reaching beginning farmers throughout New England. LFG staff helped participants with their individual farm search situations. We will offer our materials to FSA and other farm service programs that work with beginning farmers. Of our projected 200 beginning farmers reached, we can document serving 141 who will be more knowledgeable about this issue.

Number of Participants: 141
