Project Overview

Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) insurance for feeder cattle, fed cattle, and swine has been available to producers in North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Dakota since October, 2004; with Montana producers starting in 2006. LRP-Lamb was added in 2007.

Livestock Gross Margin (LGM) insurance for cattle fed to market-weight has been available to producers in ND, MN, MT, and SD since January, 2006.

Livestock producers in the Northern Plains made very limited use of these price-risk management tools. Both the recent availability and lack of formal educational programs may be reasons for lack of use.

Workshops for livestock producers in ND were held, including locations in nearby MN, SD, and MT. Eight agricultural lender conferences were held. Two crop insurance conference were also completed.

Livestock producers were much more willing to use LRP after attending the workshops. LRP was designed to protect from adverse price movements which have certainly occurred in the last few years.
