Project Overview
This project assisted vegetable farmers in developing farm produce safety plans, gaining competency in GAPs, and prepared some to go on to pass a food safety inspection gaining certification.
This project used classroom training and on-farm workshops over three days per location. Day one covered the details of GAPs focusing on assessing practices to reduce microbial contamination. Day two used our developed template to assist farmers in creating their farm produce safety plan. Day three was for those who were going to need inspection inspection and this was on-farm. The on-farm workshop’s focus was “mock” inspection taking farmers through the steps for GAPs compliance.
There were six sets of sessions.
Our expected results were One-hundred-twenty farmers taking the course, 75 completing a safety plan with more than 50 successfully achieving certification. Here are the numbers: 116 taking the first day sessions, 87 came for the second day and worked on writing their farm produce safety plan, and 35 receiving certification to date.
Number of Participants: 116
