Project Overview
The accounting records of most farms are not accurate enough to provide the decision makers with the information they need to make well informed decisions. These records are often maintained by individuals with little or no formal training in basic accounting principles and practices. By employing an innovative and highly effective method for teaching these principles and practices to non-accountants, the project team helped 100 participants improve their knowledge of these topics. As a result of participating in face-to-face educational meetings or online training sessions: 25 farms implemented changes in their accounting systems; 30 farms modified their chart of accounts to provide more usable management information; and 20 dairies adopted a standardized chart of accounts. More accurate accounting records allowed for better interaction between producers and lenders and well as better data for management decision making to reduce risk and improve profit.
