Project Overview
Based upon trainings completed in 2006, there is considerable interest in Chenango County in learning basic and advanced veterinary and first-aid procedures in animal production. Figures show that there are currently 11 large animal veterinarians providing care and coverage but projections for 2010 show only 6 veterinarians in the same area. Our project goal is to provide advanced training in species areas that were originally developed in 2006: equine, caprine, and camelid. 28 residents of the Chenango County area participated in those trainings and have been targeted for the advanced trainings. Course design focuses on “in-class” interactive learning and the “on-farm” practicals, which prove to be excellent teaching methods to educate and re-enforce procedures and ideas about animal management and care. Participants gain more confidence in their basic skills, learn advanced animal care, focus on biosecurity, and develop risk-management strategies for animal production operations.
