Project Overview
Through “Project Succession” farm owners discussed retirement goals and assessed the need to establish them, determined succession options for their farm, developed initial plans, and took steps forward in succession planning. Succession facilitators reviewed options and plans with farm owners encouraging them to implement the first step and plan future steps. Farmers received the AgPlan workbook as well as "Planning the Future of Your Farm" Virginia edition.
Following the events evaluations showed increases in planned behavior of 46.2% increase in the number of people who planned to utilize financial information in succession planning, 40.1% increase in plans to communicate with the next generation about succession planning, and 11.7% increase in the number who planned to use hard copy or online resources to assist them.
Overall 123 participated in workshops with 82 engaging in developing and communicating with the next generation.
72% of the 123 participants were 46 – 74+ years of age. The target audience as reported by the 2007 NASS statistics; farmers 55 and over owned 54% of all farm acreage in Pennsylvania.
International Farm Transition Network facilitator training program developed through grant funding was held in Pennsylvania and 17 more facilitators were trained for Pennsylvania and the Northeast.
