Project Overview
The regulatory landscape for shellfish farmers has changed significantly since the advent of new Army Corps permits, which in turn has triggered requirements for Consultation under Endangered Species Act, and state agency certifications and approvals. Consultation and permit finalization was to be complete in June, 2008, but is still in process.
PCSGA conducted workshops (attended by 48 growers) to familiarize them with the new regulatory landscape and prepare them for compliance, with a focus on new registration requirements under the Corps. Follow-up one-on-one assistance was also provided over the year (to 4 additional growers in addition to those that attended the workshops), and PCSGA developed check-lists that identify regulatory requirements. Once new permits are finalized at federal and state level, this will serve as a foundation for growers to develop their management and communication plans to aid them in achieving regulatory compliance, and avoid legal liability.
