Project Overview
The goal of this project was to build the capacity of Mississippi farmers to mitigate and manage risk on their farm. This project was geared toward Mississippians in targeted farming community areas such as the MS Gulf Coast, Central MS, the MS Delta, and the MS Choctaw Reservation. NCAT hosted eight workshops to address the following areas of risk: 1.) financial risk through business and strategic planning; 2.) legal risk through personal and business liability; 3.) marketing risk through marketing plans; and 4.) production risk through insurance products and transitioning to new, sustainable production systems. We had over 240 attendees, as well as additional viewers who watched the YouTube recordings and will have access in the future.
We originally planned to host the workshops in person on various farms across the state. However, during the time of planning and implementation of these workshops, COVID-19 hit and changed our trajectory. Since the world was on lockdown, we transitioned the workshops to an online Zoom platform. This allowed us to safely convene with farmers and even resulted in some unexpected reach to farmers that registered from multiple states outside of our target region, who would not have otherwise been able to attend.
