Project Overview

In this project, a resource guide for Delaware agricultural entrepreneurs was developed. The first phase of this project represented in this grant was the creation of material, both web-based and written publication(s), on legal, liability, safety, and human resource considerations for agri-tourism, direct farm marketing, and on-farm value added farm production ventures. Materials were used in teaching activities (workshops, short courses, presentations) and distributed to all those interested in or currently involved in these types of enterprises. The target audience was farmers, rural landowners, and non-traditional land based entrepreneurs that were currently involved in or were planning to start agritourism, entertainment farming, rural heritage attraction, direct on-farm marketing, or on-farm value-added farm product enterprises.

The target area for this project is the state of Delaware. The material was used in educational programs including a short course series, Vegetable Growers Meetings, Agritourism Association meetings, and "Profiting From a Few Acres" sessions. We reached over 500 agricultural entrepreneurs directly with written materials and over 150 in classroom and meeting formats. The core of the material being produced was a legal, liability, and human resource risk management guide that helped producers going into new enterprises navigate these hurdles successfully. This guide included information on state and local legislation, codes, and ordinances; specific state, county, and local regulatory information; liability risk assessment tools; safety audit information; labor training information; case studies of farms that have successfully achieved their goals in these areas; illustrations of key controls and checks; checklists; lease and contract information; and contact information for key agencies and individuals. Those using these materials had better knowledge of how to manage these areas of risk on their operations.
