Project Overview

This project increased the understanding of risk and the understanding of risks associated with potato production. This project increased the understanding of insurance products available, improve negotiating skills, and the ability to understand the economic risks associated with new demands on potato production. The target audience was Maine potato growers but the effort would be easily applied to other groups. Three workshops were presented to accomplish the goals. Additional resources were developed out of the effort. Participants have improved understanding of risk; improved understanding of their production costs; and improved understanding of risks associated with their production costs. Publications were developed and three workshops were proposed to educate growers on USDA GAP compliance, perform a self test of their operation to meet USDA GAP standards, and to request and pass a USDA GAP audit. The majority of the participants achieved these results and based on the documentation developed, in excess of 118 GAP certificate were issued to Maine farmers.
