Project Overview

Human resource risk for Vermont dairy businesses can be managed through improved employee management practices. One labor management issue of paramount importance to Vermont dairy producers is working with a Hispanic workforce. Producers have indicated cross-cultural understanding and training non-English speaking employees are two challenges they face with this work force. Cultural and communication issues hamper safety and productivity - impacting farm profitability.

The achieved objectives with this project: increased producer understanding of and communications with a Hispanic workforce; raised labor efficiency through producer and employee skill and safety training through four milker training workshops; individual on-farm follow-up to support implementation of new skill development with bilingual consultants; and a Spanish class ( 24 hours) for dairy producers.

108 producers and Hispanic employees attended the workshops,on-farm follow-up and or the Spanish class for producers with 30 producers adopting one or more new employee management practices as a result of this project.
