Project Overview
This endeavor continues the 2010 "Annie’s Project-Women Adding Value" RME project, targeting female and next-generation farmers, to provide instruction in the tools/strategies to mitigate the legal, marketing and financial risks associated with developing and selling value-added agricultural products. A highly interactive workshop (characteristic of Annie’s Project) was developed – addressing: product liability insurance, GAP/GHP, HACCP planning, effective allergen warnings, and proactive product recall, and delivered to 48 participants in York, Hershey and Meadville. In addition, information about the five strategies was incorporated in “Food for Profit” workshops. Twelve of these workshops (8 in Pennsylvania and 4 in Maryland) drew 309 local food producers. End-of-session surveys for both workshops and instructor observations of in-class small group activities demonstrated strong increases in knowledge, attitude, skill, and aspiration (KASA) related to food business risk management; respondents to the intermediate term impact evaluation (administered via the Internet) demonstrated follow-through on students’ intent to adopt new, and strengthen existing, risk management practices for their value-added and direct marketed food enterprises. Encouraged by the collaboration with Maryland Extension, the project team´s train-the-trainer education to personnel from the neighboring states (Maryland, West Virginia and Tennessee) is expected to allow replication of this important producer risk management program.
