Project Overview
Through this project, 158 farm women from the Northeast increased their knowledge of effective marketing, business planning and business management strategies to manage risks on their farms, and within a year, 42 farmers reported taking specific steps to reduce risk.
Participants attended the two-day Women in Sustainable Agriculture Conference, which featured an intensive "Grow Your Business" (GYB) track through which they identified their businesses´ areas of vulnerability and used conference resources to strengthen their business. The conference also offered full-day farm tours, workshops, round-tables and other networking opportunities designed to reflect the audience´s interests and preferences for educational delivery.
Overall, a total of 115 farm women (83 farmers, and 32 interns, apprentices and farm workers) reported acquiring information and/or skills they will use on their farms.
Forty-two farmers reported implementing specific risk-reducing actions within a year. These included: informed decisions about land use and production strategies; improving financial analysis and planning and record-keeping; improved labor management; and strategic marketing initiatives. All these farmers said that participation in the project contributed "significantly" or "moderately" to motivation to make changes; 41 said it contributed to increased confidence, and 40 said they gained information they have subsequently used in farm management and/or decision making.
Number of Participants: 250
