Project Overview

Dairy businesses face major risks posed by a limited supply of qualified people to fill dairy positions. To succeed in the long-term, dairy managers need to develop strategies for identifying human resource needs and developing personnel to meet those needs.
This project addressed the important area of human resource (HR) leadership with emphasis on HR planning, HR development, and succession planning. Two regional, two-day conferences reached dairy producers in Pennsylvania and surrounding states. These conferences used subject matter experts and participant interaction to teach HR leadership. In addition, local discussion groups were held to reinforce concepts covered in the conferences and to address related topics requested by producers.
As a result of participating in this project, 25 dairy producers completed a SWOT Analysis of their HR leadership. Fifteen producers completed a detailed HR plan. Strategic investment in human capital is critical to the long term viability of the dairy industry.
