Project Overview
This project addressed issues of labor management and human capital to help farmers identify labor risks and to provide them with strategies to improve labor management. Many of the farmers in our region are beginning, small, or limited resource producers; 43 of these producers participated in the workshops, with most farmers attending more than one workshop. Workshop topics included the basics of hiring and managing staff; labor laws; benefits and compensation; and use of family labor. Upon completion, farmers understood labor-related risks and labor law and had access to new tools for hiring and managing workers and for assessing their own strengths and weaknesses as managers. The resources and tools were adapted and made available to additional farmers online. Within six months of completion of the project, we anticipate that 100 farmers will use the self-assessment tools to understand their labor risks and that 50 will implement at least one improvement in their human resource strategy.
