Project Overview

The Understanding Dairy Markets website utilization increased from 13,461 average monthly visits in 2008 to 23,201 per month in 2009. During 2008, 4.8 Gb of information were downloaded monthly compared to 8.6 Gb’s downloaded monthly during 2009.
Livestock Gross Margin insurance for dairy farms became available in August 2008. LGM-Dairy is a new risk management tool allowing dairy farm operators to purchase insurance protection against unanticipated decreases in their gross margin, the difference between estimated milk revenue and purchased feed costs. The website now has an extensive set of educational materials on the LGM-Dairy insurance program. We have worked closely with the developer of this insurance product to provide as accurate and complete information as possible. We have developed separate software systems to estimate LGM-Dairy program premiums under a variety of farm applications and insurance program configurations. Both spreadsheet and web based software using current data are available.
